The Rich History of Encaustic Tiles

The term “encaustic” originates from the Ancient Greek word enkaustikos, which literally translates to “burning in.”

Originally, the name described a medieval process of creating fired ceramic tiles where the pattern was inlaid using different colors of clay, rather than painted or glazed onto the surface. This meant that even as the tile wore down over centuries of heavy foot traffic in European cathedrals, the gorgeous designs remained perfectly intact.

While the art form faded for a time, it enjoyed a massive resurgence during the 19th-century Victorian Gothic Revival. Around this same era, artisans in Spain and France developed the hydraulic cement tile process. Though technically made from compressed cement and mineral pigments rather than fired clay, these modern treasures inherited the “encaustic” name due to their striking visual resemblance to medieval inlaid work.

Today, encaustic cement tiles are loved globally for their Old-World character, matte finish, and the beautiful, soul-filled patina they naturally develop over time.

Why Choose Legacy Interior Services for Your Encaustic Tile Project?

Because encaustic and cement tiles are handmade, they vary slightly in thickness and are highly susceptible to staining from grout or improper adhesives if not pre-sealed correctly. A standard tile installation approach can ruin these delicate surfaces.

At Legacy Interior Services, we understand the science behind setting encaustic tile:

  • Flawless Substrate Preparation: We ensure perfectly level floors to eliminate lippage.
  • Strict Pre-Sealing Protocols: We seal the tiles prior to grouting to prevent permanent grout haze or staining.
  • Expert Layout Blending: We hand-mix tiles from multiple boxes during dry-laying to create a balanced, stunning variation of color and pattern.
